Abstract:

Based on the increased attention and kindness shown towards indigenous cultures around the world, especially for the minority and disadvantaged indigenous peoples, more protection should be provided to insure their development. In view of this, this study uses the festivities of three indigenous peoples in the Amis, Saisiyat and Dawu as the subjects of this research.

This study explores the origins and legends of traditional ceremonies of these three indigenous peoples’ cultures, and attempts to elaborate on the preservation of their cultures, introduction of the cultural and creative industry, and the rise of tourism policies with the display of ceremonial culture. The challenge lies in arousing public awareness of cultural preservation and continuation of minority indigenous peoples, safeguarding and respecting the traditional culture of the indigenous peoples so that they can continue to grow while maintaining their own unique culture in an environment where only the strong survive.

This study analyzes the future preservation and continuation of the three indigenous peoples’ cultures from the perspective of the cultural industry and ceremonial culture through the elaboration of the important ceremonies and legends, literature review, discussion of theories, professional perspectives, and in-depth field research. Do deficiencies still exist in relevant units with direct jurisdiction and government departments? Are there any gaps that allows the cultures of the indigenous peoples to continue maintaining their unique traditions as they come under the influence of modern civilization, and receive support and respect by the public?

With the study being completed, I’d like to thank my advisory professors A-ron Liu and Ted Chiou for their guidance during my PHD studies; Dean I-chun Liu and Secretary Shang-fang Hsu for their assistance and care when I was ill; Dr. Sheng-zhen Hsu as well as the students and faculty of the Shu-Te University’s Department of Arts Management for their encouragement and support.

There are a total of eight chapters in this study, and the final chapter includes recommendations for this study. In addition to the research opinions, it wasn’t possible to learn more due to being unable to carry out long-term observations and participation in the lives of the indigenous peoples. The living spaces of the three groups of indigenous peoples was quite vast, and the timing of their ceremonies were also different. As long as there are opportunities in the future, researchers should explore the life patterns and traditional spirit of the indigenous peoples in a more in-depth and detailed manner.
